Terms of Service
The short version
By using Checkmate Mind, you agree to use it for learning, treat others kindly, and not abuse the platform. If you're 12 or younger, please don't use the service. If you mess up, we may suspend or delete your account. Our AI is helpful but not a substitute for a real teacher, parent, doctor, lawyer, or therapist.
Who can use Checkmate Mind
You must be 13 years or older to use this platform. By creating an account, you confirm that you are 13 or older.
If you are between 13 and 17, we recommend talking to a parent or guardian about your use of the platform. Your data is yours, but we encourage open conversations about online activity with trusted adults.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Harass, bully, or threaten other users
- Post content that is illegal, hateful, sexually explicit, or that promotes self-harm or violence
- Pretend to be someone else or share another person's account
- Try to break into other accounts, hack the platform, or interfere with how it works
- Scrape, copy, or republish the platform's content
- Use the platform to cheat on assignments where your school or teacher has prohibited AI assistance — that's between you and them, but we won't help you hide it
- Use automated tools (bots, scripts) to interact with the platform without permission
We may suspend or delete accounts that violate these rules. We may report illegal activity to law enforcement.
The AI tutor and decision simulator are educational, not professional advice
Checkmate Mind's AI features generate educational content based on patterns in language. The AI can be helpful for studying, but:
- The AI can be wrong. Always check important information with a teacher, textbook, or other reliable source.
- The Decisions feature is designed to help you think through choices in a structured way. It is not professional counseling, medical advice, legal advice, or therapy. For serious decisions about your life, talk to a parent, counselor, doctor, or other trusted adult.
- If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself or others, please reach out to a crisis hotline. In the US, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Your account
You are responsible for keeping your password secure. Don't share it with anyone. If you think someone else has accessed your account, change your password and let us know.
We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms. You can delete your account at any time by emailing hello@checkmatemind.com.
Your content
You own the content you create — your stories, your decisions, your notes. By posting content publicly (e.g., publishing a story to the public stories feed), you grant us a limited license to display it on the platform. You can delete your content at any time.
We don't claim ownership of your work. We don't use your content to train AI models. Your private content (notes, decisions, quiz answers) is private.
Our content
Curriculum content (textbook excerpts, AP frameworks) is sourced from open educational resources like OpenStax (Creative Commons) and public materials from the College Board. We provide attribution where required. The platform code, design, and original content are the property of Checkmate Mind.
Fees and payment
The platform is currently free to use. If we add paid features in the future, we will notify you in advance and you can choose whether to use them.
Disclaimers and limits of liability
We provide Checkmate Mind "as is." We try hard to make it work well, but we can't guarantee it will always be available, bug-free, or perfectly accurate.
To the maximum extent allowed by law, we are not liable for any indirect, consequential, or incidental damages arising from your use of the platform. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you have paid us in the past 12 months (which is $0 for free accounts).
Nothing in these Terms limits liability for fraud or intentional misconduct on our part.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States. Any disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in San Diego County, California.
Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify users and ask for re-acceptance. Continued use of the platform after changes means you accept the new Terms.
