Checkmate Mind

About Checkmate Mind

Checkmate Mind is a learning platform built around three ideas: that chess teaches you how to think, that AI can be a patient tutor when human tutors aren't available, and that good decisions are skills that can be practiced.

We built it because we couldn't find anything quite like it.

The story

Checkmate Mind started in 2026 as a project by Iniya Mathivanan, a 14-year-old high school student in San Diego. Iniya is also the founder of Chess4Girls, a nonprofit she started in 2025 to help more young women learn chess.

While running Chess4Girls, Iniya noticed something: the patterns students develop in chess — analyzing positions, weighing tradeoffs, planning ahead — translate to academic work and life decisions. Good chess players think differently. They look for patterns. They consider consequences before acting.

Checkmate Mind is the platform that puts those three things together: chess training to build the underlying thinking skills, an AI tutor that helps students learn academic subjects at their own pace, and a decision simulator that lets students think through real choices — like which AP class to take or whether to quit a sport — before committing.

Our values

Built for students, not for advertisers. We don't sell your data. We don't run ads. We don't optimize for engagement at the expense of your wellbeing. The platform exists to help you learn, not to keep you scrolling.

Honest about AI's limits. Our AI tutor is helpful but not infallible. We tell you when AI generated something. We encourage you to verify important information with teachers and books. AI is a tool, not a replacement for human teachers, parents, or your own thinking.

Privacy first. We collect the minimum needed to make the platform work. We're transparent about what we collect and why. You can delete your account and data anytime.

Built with care for young users. Many of our users are minors. We design with that in mind: clear language, thoughtful defaults, no manipulative design patterns, and strong protections for personal data.

How we're funded

Checkmate Mind is currently free to use and self-funded by its founders. We may add paid features in the future to keep the platform sustainable. If we do, we'll be transparent about it and give you advance notice.

We are an independent project, not affiliated with any school district, textbook publisher, or test prep company. We respect and partner with Chess4Girls (Iniya's nonprofit), but Checkmate Mind and Chess4Girls are separate organizations with separate missions.

What's next

We have ambitious plans: bringing in more curriculum content from open educational sources, building features for parents to support their children's learning, creating circles where students can study together, and eventually working with schools and teachers who want better tools for their classrooms.

But for now, we're focused on making the core platform work really well for individual students. The bigger features will come once the foundation is solid.
